USRT Toronto Friday Report

USRT arrives at Toronto looking for some success.

After a challenging affair at the famed Mont Tremblant circuit the US RaceTronics (USRT) team is looking to rebound and move up in the championship standings. Carl Skerlong (#24 King Taco/USRT) currently sits ninth in the championship standing with 78 points while David Garza (#4 Axtel/Tecate/Madisa/USRT) is tied with fellow competitor John Edwards (#7 Red Bull/INDECK) at 48 points.  A great result by both drivers on the streets of Toronto will bring them that much closer to a top-5 Championship season ending effort.

Friday at Toronto began on a positive note despite the numerous Red Flags that came out throughout the morning practice and the qualifying session.  For Skerlong Friday started off on a cautious pace and throughout the qualifying session the youngster from Seattle, Washington got more and more confident with the tight and narrow street course in the heart of Toronto.  Skerlong, for most of the session hung around between the twentieth and fifteenth spot on the time sheet.  As time wore on he powered # 4 entry to the eleventh spot on the timesheet with a fast lap of 1:06.735.  As the minutes ticked away and finally the checkered flag displayed, Skerlong's time held up and eleventh is where he would finish.

For teammate David Garza Friday at Toronto would also be positive and represent one of his best qualifying efforts thus far.  Garza would enter the timesheets cautiously as well and creep up to the top-10 group with his speed.  After pitting for adjustments and later for the Red Flags Garza was able to get the car to his liking.  With eleven minutes left in the session he pulled his fastest lap of the session with a time of 1:06.461.  Pushing the car to its maximum capabilities Garza soon thereafter spun on Turn # 4 but quickly recovered without any damage to the car.   Garza even went on to improve his time and put up a fast lap of 1:06.379, however a couple of Garza's fellow competitors also put up fast times as well.  Garza would end up in the very respectable seventh place shot.

Garza and Skerlong will be prepared for Saturday's activities and ready to improve on their times and hopefully garner a very good starting spot for Sunday's race.

Carl Skerlong: "We had to break in a couple of things on the car today so between that, the Red Flags, and the traffic I wasn't able to get the times that I wanted but we definitely think we figured out some things on the car today and made some real progress and will hopefully apply that for tomorrow's sessions.  But overall I'm pleased with today."

David Garza - "We should have finished higher because I was actually running a faster lap and was interrupted by a Yellow Flag.  But regardless, I am very happy because this is not a bad result at all.  I also know that the car has much more available to give me without having to work on it too much. I am real optimistic about tomorrow and I'm looking forward to a little bit of luck so we can capitalize on it."
