Persistence under difficult circumstances was the lesson learned from USRT's dedicated efforts at Mont Tremblant
If there was a lesson learned by this weekend's race at Le Circuit Mont-Tremblant it was "never give up". Both US RaceTronics drivers took those words to heart and proved them on the track in what would turn out to be under very difficult circumstances.
After starting the race in the 12th spot USRT driver David Garza (#4 Axtel/Tecate/Madisa/USRT) was looking forward to continuing his streak of best finishes after obtaining career-best results in each of his six Atlantic starts, which was capped by an eighth-place run in the Grand Prix of Cleveland. Garza would start the race strongly and ran as high as ninth and battled back and forth with his competitors. Garza would settle in the eleventh position for most of the race with a comfortable gap between him and the twelfth spot of J.R. Hildebrand (#36 Newman Wachs Racing). Bad luck would put a damper on an otherwise stellar day for the young Mexican when on the final lap his car started running out of gas and began to sputter. Garza's eleventh spot would end up being eaten away and he would end up crossing the checkered in the fifteenth spot.
Carl Skerlong (#24 King Taco/USRT) was even less fortunate than his teammate when on the third lap, after an incredibly good start, he had contact with another driver which resulted in damage to the youngster's car. As the #24 limped back to the pits the USRT team was prepared with a spare nose and quickly made the repairs and got Skerlong out on the track without losing a lap. Skerlong got back into the race albeit in the last spot. Not to be deterred Skerlong pounded through the track and on is thirteenth lap Carl threw down what would end up being the fastest lap of the race. Carl would end up picking up six positions, finishing up in the nineteenth spot. Carl heads to Toronto ninth in the championship standings with 78 points.
Carl Skerlong: "Well hopefully our pace here today will serve as further motivation to get back on it in Toronto next weekend. We had the fastest car on track and should have been challenging at the front but it wasn't to be. It's frustrating but we stayed on the lead lap and still scored some points!"
David Garza - "It's not how I wanted to finish the race but this is racing and things like this will happen and now it's up to me and the team to rebound and go to Toronto with even more determination to do well and get a great result. I'm confident that we can achieve it"
