Las Vegas was not kind to the US RaceTronics squad. Now the team regroups and wprepares for Long Beach.
Las Vegas, NV (April 10, 2007) - US RaceTronics Las Vegas Race Report
The start of the 2007 Cooper Tires Presents The Champ Car Atlantic Championship Powered by Mazda season was a tough one for the US RaceTronics (USRT) team. The streets of Las Vegas were indeed cruel to the USRT and its drivers, and for that matter many of their fellow competitors. Determined, the USRT crew will put the pieces back together and show up at Round #2 Long Beach Grand Prix race regrouped and hungrier than ever.
Both USRT drivers, Carl Skerlong # 24 King Taco/US RaceTronics Swift Mazda-Cosworth and David Garza #4 Axtel/Tecate/Madisa/US RaceTronics Swift Mazda-Cosworth started the race in the sixth and eighteenth slots respectively. At the drop of the green flag both drivers had excellent starts and moved up the grid in dramatic fashion. Garza for his part was able to maneuver his car through the field while Skerlong was able to take the third place position and was quickly setting up for a pass when the first of many yellow flags came out. The yellow flag unfortunately was being displayed because of an incident that involved his teammate Garza. Garza's front was clipped by a fellow racer causing extensive front wing damage. Garza was advised to come into the pit by his Engineer Peter Jacobs. Wanting to keep Garza on the lead lap during the Caution, the team worked feverishly to replace the front wing. After 2 pit stops the team came to the realization that the damage was too extensive and would require further time. The plan was to get David out so he could still try to get points.
While Garza's car was being repaired, Skerlong got a great restart, however, Condor Motorsports' Franck Perera and Skerlong tangled on the course and Skerlong's #24 had contact at Turn #5. The damage was enough to end Skerlong's promising day. Skerlong would finish in the twenty-sixth spot.
Garza was able to make it back on track. While the car was far from perfect, Garza was able to race and gain valuable experience. Once again though Garza was a victim of circumstance and became a victim of another melee. After taking defensive measures to avoid the tangle Garza was hit from behind by Paladin Motorsports' Adrien Herberts. Garza's day had also come to premature end. A disappointed Garza would go on to finish the race in the twenty-fifth spot.
The US RaceTronics team, while disappointed, will be prepared for Long Beach with a renewed vigor for success and a chance to show what this team and its drivers are capable of doing.
David Garza - "This is definitely not what I wanted for my debut but we'll learn from this and and we will be ready for Long Beach"
Carl Skerlong - "Well besides crashing out this has been a great weekend. Everyone on the team worked really hard and we've had a top three car for pretty much the whole event. I was held up a bit in traffic in Saturday qualifying which hurt but going into the race we knew we had a decent set-up. This was my first ever street course event so a few things were new to me but heading to Long Beach next weekend I've got a lot of confidence in both the team and the car that we can keep it at the front."
