Heartbreak greeted Team Stargate Worlds drivers Jonathan Bomarito and Simona De Silvestro
Arriving at the final race of the Atlantic Championship season with a slim seven-point lead over second place Newman Wachs driver Jonathan Summerton, 176-169, and a 10-point lead over Summerton's teammate John Edwards. Team Stargate driver Simona De Silvestro looked to cap off the 2009 season in exciting form by winning the coveted series championship. Up to this point De Silvestro has had a record breaking year with four victories and four pole positions aboard the cockpit of the No. 78 Stargate Worlds/Maakoa/Cheyenne Mountain Games/FireSky/Cardinal Technologies machine.
Her teammate, Jonathan Bomarito, arrived at the final race of the season looking for a strong finish to his partial season. This was the Monterey, California resident's third race of the season and with the hometown crowd support, he was looking forward to pulling off a strong finish. Bomarito had joined the Team Stargate Worlds organization after team regular Frankie Muniz suffered a season ending injury earlier in the year at Mid Ohio.
After qualifying in fifth place De Silvestro arrived at the track Sunday morning and immediatley focused on the race at hand. Lining up on the grid De Silvestro rocketed off her starting spot and focused on regaining ground on the Newman Wachs duo of Summerton and Edwards. De Silvestro began carving her way around the track and as she approached the famous corkscrew the No.1 entry of Markus Niemela unceremoniously got into the side of De Silvestro causing her to go off track and into the tires. Unfortunately that overly aggressive action ended De Silvestro's promising 2009 season and any chance she had of winning the prestigious championship. Unable to continue De Silvestro's day was done. She officially would end up in the tenth spot for the race and third in the 2009 Championship. Newman Wachs driver Jonathan Edwards finished the race in second and would be crowned 2009 Atlantic Series champion. Series officials would later penalize Niemela for the incident, which they deemed avoidable.
Fortunes for the Team Stargate Worlds crew would continue to take a turn for the worse as De Silvestro's teammate Bomarito would also be stricken by bad luck. Starting the race in the third spot, after a spectacular qualifying effort earlier in the weekend, the hometown favorite soon began experiencing handling issues with the car. Undeterred, Bomarito continued on but the car finally failed him on lap #22. Bomarito would limp back into the pits and officially finish in 8th, ending a promising race for the talented driver.
